Launching Careers and Building Leaders

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Cadet Program, established in 1973 under then-Sheriff Brad Leach, has offered young individuals a hands-on introduction to the law enforcement profession for over 50 years. Open to participants aged 14 to 21, this career orientation program provides invaluable experience in public safety and criminal justice, preparing the next generation of leaders.

Cadets engage in a variety of activities, including:

  • Ride-Along Program: Accompanying deputies on patrol.
  • Attend Local and National Cadet Competitions
  • Public Safety Operations: Observing the Communications Center and working in the Boulder County Jail.
  • Community Service: Assisting with traffic control, school safety programs, and community events like National Night Out and the Superior Chili Fest.

Professional training, national conferences, and competitions further enhance their growth, helping cadets make informed decisions about pursuing a career in law enforcement.

The impact of the cadet program is profound. Boulder County Sheriff Curtis Johnson credits the program with shaping his career and life. Joining as a cadet in 1986, Sheriff Johnson said, “My time serving in the cadet post was invaluable. It helped not only launch my career in law enforcement, but I also learned valuable skills and gained life-long friends.”

Sheriff Johnson is one of many success stories. Former Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle (1975) and Greg Morrison (1978), who went on to serve as Chief of Police in multiple jurisdictions, are just a few notable alumni. Current staff at the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, including division chiefs, commanders, deputies, and detectives, began their careers in the program.

Applications are accepted year-round. Candidates must be 14-21 years old, maintain a “C” average in school, and meet specific character requirements. Cadets are expected to commit 16 hours per month and attend bi-weekly meetings.
