Seasonal Fire Restrictions are put in place when weather and fuel conditions show a long period of increased fire danger, making it likely that fires could start and spread quickly. Additionally, all open burning is not allowed in unincorporated Boulder County when the National Weather Service issues alerts like Red Flag Warnings or high wind events.
When a fire ban is active, the county uses signage, social media, and other forms to notify and alert the public.
Fire Restrictions in Boulder County
The County Sheriff, the Board of County Commissioners, or the State of Colorado can put fire restrictions in place. These restrictions help keep our community safe when conditions raise the risk of wildfires.
When is Open Burning Not Allowed?
Open burning is not allowed anywhere in unincorporated Boulder County during certain weather alerts from the National Weather Service. These alerts include:
- Red Flag Warning: Warm temperatures, very low humidity, and strong winds combine to create extreme fire danger.
- High Wind Warning: Strong winds of 40 mph or more are expected and could easily spread fire.
- High Wind Watch: Strong winds may develop and increase the risk of fire spread.
- Fire Weather Watch: Conditions could lead to a dangerous fire situation within the next 12 to 72 hours.
If any of these alerts are active, open burning is not allowed from midnight to midnight on the date of the event.
