Boulder County Motor Vehicle offices are open Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Offices are closed on Fridays. Appointments are required for in-person services. Registration renewals must be completed online, by mail or drop box, or at a self-service kiosk. Renewals are not an in-person service.
Colorado law allows you to renew your vehicle registration during the month before it expires, the month it expires, or up to the last day of the month after it expires. This is called the one-month grace period. No late fees apply during this period. If you plan to drive outside of Colorado, renew before your registration expires. Other states may not recognize Colorado’s grace period.
You will receive a renewal postcard in the mail before your registration expires.
Boulder County residents can use any self-service kiosk across the state.

To renew your vehicle registration, gather these items:
Your renewal notice (postcard), your last registration, or your VIN and license plate number.
A method of payment. Payment options vary by renewal method.
Proof of Colorado auto insurance (if your postcard asks for it)
Proof of a passed emissions test (if your postcard asks for it)
You must get an emissions test if it is listed your renewal postcard. After you pass the test, wait 24 hours before renewing online or at a self-service kiosk. This allows the test result to be updated in our system.

Important: If your plates are expired by more than 13 months, you must get new plates. In this case, please schedule an appointment. This service must be completed in our office.
Late Fees
Renewal postcards are not forwarded to new addresses. Update your address online to make sure you receive future renewal notices. Update both your legal and mailing addresses.

Be careful when searching online for motor vehicle information. Many unofficial websites provide inaccurate information or charge unnecessary fees.
Check the web address (URL) of any site before using it. Official Boulder County and State of Colorado motor vehicle websites will have a URL that includes colorado.gov or bouldercounty.gov. Boulder County also uses shortened links that include boco.org.
