Project Visibility © Documentary and Training

The Project Visibility documentary and accompanying training was created in 2004 by the Boulder County Area Agency on Aging in response to the fear expressed by Rainbow Elders (LGBTQ+/50+) that they would need to retreat back in the closet in order to access assisted living or nursing home care. The new version of the documentary features Rainbow Elders who are living and experiencing life in Boulder and surrounding counties in the state of Colorado. They share their stories, so we can make visible the differences that exist within the LGBTQ+ community. The video includes chapters about:

  1. Coming Out
  2. Family
  3. Oppression and Discrimination
  4. History and Policy
  5. Language and Terminology
  6. Advice for Providers

The training follows up on the above concepts, concluding with promising practices that can be implemented in order to create more inclusive communities for LGBTQ+ older adults. Project funded by the NextFifty Initiative.

If you would like to schedule a customized Project Visibility training for your team, please email RainbowElders@bouldercounty.gov.

Project Visibility © Online Training

“Project Visibility: Person-Centered Care for LGBTQ+ Older Adults” is now available 24/7 as an online training. This free 30-minute interactive course is designed for managers and employees of nursing and assisted living homes, and home health care agencies. The goal of Project Visibility is to co-create an aging services community that is informed, sensitive to, and supportive of LGBTQ+ older adults.

The course reviews LGBTQ+ history and terms, and teaches skills we hope will open the hearts and minds of those caring for this often invisible population. These skills include:

  • Make no assumptions
  • Ask open-ended questions
  • Affirm resident rights

Train the Trainer

Designed for those who have already participated in a Project Visibility training, this course covers learning styles and implicit bias while teaching folks how to present Project Visibility in their own communities. Materials include our Project Visibility manual, Train-the-trainer manual, and documentary.
