Hello and welcome to the Public Works Resource Conservation Division Newsletter!
I’m so happy to be in your inbox.
This quarterly newsletter will keep you up- to-date with Resource Conservation Division (RCD) news and provide you with fun information and helpful resources.
Now that we’re in the new year, I thought it’d be fun to do a little recap of some of my favorite moments at the Resource Conservation Division in 2023.
- I loved meeting lots of new people at many different outreach events in 2023, including this one at Nude Foods for Earth Day.
- In April, the RCD crew set out for our Adopt-a-Road rubbish pick up alongside Cherryvale Road.
- Tuesdays are the day when most of our team is in the office. It's a day filled with camaraderie and enjoyment, reflecting the positive vibes of our office culture. Pictured here is my office mate, Tina, on Halloween.
- In November, we held the first ever “Reduce and Reuse Showcase.” Ten businesses and organizations were represented to talk about how they reduce and reuse to make our world a better place.
- Some RCD staff and a few others who contribute greatly to our work went bowling for our staff holiday party in December.
The holiday season has come to an end, and you might be wondering what to do with your Christmas tree and leftover gift wrap. We're here to help!
Did you know that wrapping paper is not the best for recycling at paper mills? Because of this, the Boulder County Recycling Center doesn't want it in the regular recycling bins; however, we understand that there's a lot of it during the holidays. That's why, until January 31, you can take your non-metallic gift wrap to the Boulder County Recycling Center Drop-Off Center at 1901 63rd Street in Boulder for recycling.
Just remember to take off all ribbons, bows, and tags before you drop off your gift wrap. And please, no glitter! Let's make sure we recycle right.
If you're wondering what to do with your Christmas tree, we've got you covered! Depending on where you live in the county, there are various places where you can take your tree. Check out the options on our website. Before dropping off your tree, make sure to remove all tinsel, lights, and decorations. Let's keep it simple and eco-friendly!

In 2021, Colorado took a significant step in reducing plastic pollution by passing the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act (HB21-1162), also known as PPRA. Phase 1 of PPRA, implemented in 2023, introduced a statewide fee on plastic and paper bags. Now, as we start phase 2, which began January 1, 2024, here's what you need to know:
For more details on who the polystyrene ban applies to and who is exempt, refer to this flyer made by Eco-Cycle.
The PPRA brings about significant changes for businesses and customers, especially those involved in the use of takeout containers. To help navigate these changes and explore sustainable alternatives, we recommend checking out the comprehensive "Guide to Sustainable Serviceware for Restaurants and Food Prep Businesses." This guide provides valuable insights into environmentally friendly options for service-ware, supporting businesses and customers in making more sustainable choices.

- Longmont’s Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO) has started! The URO requires recycling collection for commercial businesses and multifamily properties not already subscribed to recycling collection services. Longmont is providing resources and financial assistance to support implementation, including signage, training, and educational materials. For assistance and more information on the URO, please visit the City’s URO website.
