Commissioners Urge Residents to Contact Colorado’s Congressional Representatives
We urge you to make your voices heard.
Federal Spending Decisions Impact Us All
You may have heard that the U.S. Congress is currently considering huge cuts to the country’s social safety net, i.e. Medicaid, affordable healthcare coverage, Child Tax Credit, food benefits, etc. Maybe you’ve heard about what’s being called “One Big Beautiful Bill”, H.R. 1., or the “budget reconciliation bill”. It was recently approved by the U.S. House of Representatives by just one vote (215-214).
If this bill is approved in its current form by the U.S. Senate, the effects will be devastating for our county, Colorado, and the whole country.
- We oppose reducing access to affordable health care coverage that will leave more people without health insurance.
- We oppose changes to the Child Tax Credit that reduce support for low and moderate income families.
- We oppose reductions and changes to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (sometimes called ‘food stamps’) that will leave more people hungry.
- We oppose cuts to Medicaid health care coverage and changes that make it more difficult for people to get health benefits they are entitled to.
If you want more detail on facts and figures, check out our recent letter regarding the version of the bill passed by the House of Representatives and a recent letter from the Congressional Budget Office.
We all do better when we all do better. Hard-working members of our community rely on these essential services.
Every single one of us – even if we don’t currently access these services – do better when children in our community have access to food, when older residents can access care, and when a family can afford to visit a doctor without bankrupting themselves.
Let’s not forget that it is people with lower incomes that are most likely to put money right back into the local economy.
It’s More Than Just Spending
We urge you to have a look at the bill yourself. Read about it, ask questions. Consider it objectively and stay informed of changes. We reviewed it with our Strategic Priorities and State Legislative Priorities in mind. Here’s what concerns us:
- De-regulation of gun silencers
- Repeal of sections of the Clean Air Act
- Limits to Colorado’s (and all states’) ability to regulate Artificial Intelligence (which is crucial for protecting consumers and combatting election misinformation)
- Barriers to legal immigration
- Measures that erode trust in law enforcement and common-sense immigration reform
- Limits to the authority of federal judges to hold U.S. government official in contempt of court
Non-budgetary provisions should follow Senate rules and be debated and voted on as separate legislation.
Contacting Colorado’s Senators and Representatives
We urge you as Coloradans to make your opinions heard by contacting Colorado’s Senators and Representatives. These decisions are going to be made soon – perhaps by early July. The bill will likely have to return to the House of Representatives if the Senate makes any changes to it. Please make your voice heard.

UPDATE: Last month, Rep. Joe Neguse succeeded in getting a provision to sell public lands in western states, including Colorado, removed from the bill. Proposed text in the Senate's version would add it back in for an even larger area.
