Civil Process
Colorado state law requires the Sheriff of each Colorado County serve civil processes of the Courts within their jurisdiction. They’re required to accept and serve civil process from all Colorado counties, every state of the union, and the federal government. Civil process includes all types of papers resulting from civil litigation, including summons and complaints, subpoenas, court orders, writs of execution, writs of garnishment, and Evictions and Writs of Restitution (commonly known as eviction orders).
Staffing
The Sheriff’s Office Civil Section is staffed by one sergeant, three full time deputies, a legal secretary, and two law enforcement technicians (L.E.T.’s), acting under the supervision of a Commander. Patrol deputies periodically supplement the efforts of the Civil Section, by serving civil processes outside normal working hours (e.g. the service of domestic violence protection orders).
Hours
The Sheriff’s Office Civil Section is open to the public between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and is located at the Boulder County Sheriff’s Headquarters, 5600 Flatiron Parkway, Boulder, 80301.
How To Submit Civil Processes
To submit civil processes, you may email your paperwork to SheriffCivil@BoulderCounty.gov if it is legible, concise, and in an easily understandable format. After your submission, we will call you to arrange a valid form of payment. You can also submit your paperwork in person at Sheriff’s Office Headquarter or via US Postal Service (mail) correspondence.
Fees For Service
Fees for service (which are set by statute) must be paid in advance. If you are due a refund, a check will be mailed to you. If you owe additional fees, you will be billed for the difference. All fees for mileage are based upon an established zone system. Service is charged on a round trip, per mile basis.
We accept cash, checks, and credit cards.
The service of civil papers is based upon the information you provide. We encourage you to submit complete, accurate information (addresses, description of the person to be served, place of employment, work hours, etc.) This will assist in ensuring successful service. A Return of Service (proof of service for the courts), documenting successful service or non-service of the process (paper) will be mailed or emailed to you. You can also pick-up the Return of Service at Sheriff’s Office Headquarters in person.
Deputies serve civil processes 7:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m., Monday through Friday.
