Ever wonder what lies beyond our solar system? Or how far we can see when we look deep into the night sky? Join Boulder County volunteer naturalists for an evening of exploration that begins close to home and extends to the origins of the universe. Start with a look at the objects found in our own solar system, then stretch outward to the stars and structures of the Milky Way. Then we’ll travel even farther, discovering what “deep sky” is and how these distant sights help us understand where the universe came from. Along the way, we’ll introduce the Big Bang in simple, engaging terms and share how scientists study the early universe today. Presentations will be at the picnic shelter, followed by stargazing in the parking area. The Longmont Astronomical Society provides telescopes. This year, World Migratory Bird Day highlights birds from around the world to celebrate the 2026 theme: “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!” Learn how these species contribute to our understanding of migratory patterns and connect with communities across the globe. Experience an opportunity to sketch the awe-inspiring aspects of our county parks through a process of observation, contemplation, and visualization. Absolutely no experience in the arts is needed. Volunteer naturalists will guide your journey with ideas, some direction, and an opportunity to practice various skills. Through a series of five programs, we will explore basic sketching principles to make your experience unique and fun-filled. Discover the resilience of nature on a 2-mile hike along Heil Valley Ranch’s Lichen Loop, where wildflowers bloom in the wake of wildfire. We’ll explore their beauty, ecological role, and cultural history at a relaxed pace. The trail includes moderate inclines and rocky areas and may have mud or ice patches; hiking poles and traction are recommended. Join us to meet some of our most important native conifers. We will walk about 2 miles around Mud Lake and down to the creek, looking for examples of the diversity of conifers in this ecosystem, including pine, spruce, and fir. We will attend to the habitats of the various evergreen species, why they are, where they are, and look for evidence of their relationships with other plant and animal members of the forest community.
