Water rescue after single vehicle accident

Boulder County, Colo. - On Monday July 22, 2019 shortly before 11:00 a.m., deputies with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and several other agencies responded to the 22,500 block of the South St. Vrain Drive in unincorporated Boulder County, for a report of a single vehicle accident.

The initial report was that the vehicle had veered off the highway and rolled into the Middle St. Vrain Creek. The driver was reported to be trapped inside the vehicle. Upon arrival, first responders and several witnesses began rescue attempts of the driver. The driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, was identified as a 81-year-old male who resides in Allenspark.

Rescue attempts were hampered by the fact that the vehicle was in fast moving water. Several cables were attached to the vehicle to prevent it from rolling further downstream. Dive personnel from Boulder Emergency Squad were able to assist in securing the vehicle and removing the driver. After approximately 45 minutes, the driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.

Agencies responding to this incident included, Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Allenspark Fire, Lyons Fire, Boulder Emergency Squad, Colorado State Patrol and Estes Park Health (ambulance).

The Colorado State Patrol is currently investigating the incident under their case number: 1D192985. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case number is: 19-4115.
