US 36 Wildlife Crossings Proposal Public Meeting
Tuesday, August 6, 5:30-7:30, in Longmont

Boulder County has started investigating the feasibility of building wildlife crossing structures on US Highway 36 between Boulder and Lyons, specifically between Lefthand Canyon Drive and State Highway 66.

Parks & Open Space staff is hosting a public meeting for residents to receive the latest information, ask questions, and express concerns.

Date: Tuesday, August 6

Time: 5:30-7:30 pm.

Location: Ron Stewart Parks & Open Space Building 5201 St. Vrain Rd., Longmont, CO 80501.

Key considerations:

There are high levels of wildlife-vehicle collisions that occur along US Highway 36. This leads to dangerous conditions for the public and the wildlife.
Wildlife crossing structures allow for the safe passage of wildlife in both directions across deadly roads, which benefits wildlife and the people who are protected from these collisions.
In a recently released Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Eastern Slope and Plains Wildlife Prioritization Study of dangerous roads in eastern Colorado, this stretch of US 36 was ranked highest in our CDOT Region for needing safety measures. This ranking was based on the overall numbers of annual wildlife-vehicle collisions, compared to the percentages of deer and elk population numbers impacted. The rankings were also based on known deer and elk migration patterns.
Currently, there are federal and state grant funds specifically allocated for wildlife crossings. Boulder County is very interested in these opportunities as a critical piece of making this project a reality.
