Update on the Marshall Fire Investigation

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office’s investigation into the cause and origin of the Marshall Fire is ongoing and expected to take several more months. The Sheriff’s Office recognizes the importance of this investigation and the community’s desire to understand what happened, however, we believe a thorough investigation is always warranted.

Investigators have been working with experts from around the country to analyze the evidence and to identify the possible cause and origin of the fire. That work is ongoing and will take time. Unfortunately, the Sheriff’s Office cannot share specific information regarding an open investigation.

The investigation thus far has included, but not limited to, the following:

  • Reviewing nearly 200 tips from the community
  • Multiple search warrants for physical and digital property
  • Reviewing hundreds of videos and photos
  • Interviewing hundreds of victims and witnesses
  • Reviewing countless 911 calls

Once the investigation is complete, sheriff’s detectives will present the evidence to the District Attorney’s Office, who will determine if any charges are appropriate.

Once this is complete, we anticipate conducting a media briefing to discuss the investigation outcome, release pertinent photos and videos, and answer questions related to the investigation.

The associated Boulder County Sheriff's Office case number is: 21-6301
