Two rescues from the South Mesa Trailhead

Boulder County, Colo. - On Thursday, August 12, 2021, at approximately 12:00 p.m., the Boulder County Communications Center was notified of an injured hiker on the Shadow Canyon Trail.

A twenty-six-year-old male from Boulder, CO, sustained a non-life-threating head injury after slipping on rocks near the Shadow Canyon Trail. The injured hiker was able to hike out and met rescuers at the base of Shadow Canyon. Mountain View Fire Protection District provided medical care and ambulance transport to an area hospital. The rescue lasted approximately one and one-half hours.

Agencies assisting with this rescue included: Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Mountain View Fire Protection District.

Shortly after the first call came, rescuers came upon a hiker experiencing a medical emergency, which was unrelated to the first call, but was located in the same area.

A sixty-seven-year-old male from Boulder, CO, sustained a non-life-threatening medical emergency while hiking on the Mesa Trail. Mountain View Fire Protection District provided medical care and a courtesy ride to the South Mesa Trailhead. The hiker declined ambulance transport. The rescue lasted approximately one hour.

Agencies assisting with this rescue included: Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Mountain View Fire Protection District.
