Search for overdue hiker in the Johnny Park area

Boulder County, Colo. - On Monday, November 16, 2020, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the Boulder County Communications Center was notified of an overdue hiker in Boulder County.

A 20-year-old male from Tampa, FL went hiking during the day, but was unable to find his vehicle after dark. The male was not familiar with the area and was not prepared for cold overnight temperatures. Deputies located the hiker’s vehicle parked near the Coulson Gulch Trailhead.

Searchers located the hiker after approximately three hours of ground searching, searching with utility terrain vehicles (UTV) and searching with unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The male was uninjured and returned to his vehicle with searchers.

Here are some safety reminders for those recreating this time of year. It gets dark early this time of year, before you head out check to see when the open space or trail closes, it's usually at sunset. Always have extra clothing, water and food with you. Let someone know where you are going and when you will be back.

Agencies assisting with this search included: Big Elk Fire, Lyons Fire, Pinewood Springs Fire, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder Emergency Squad, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, and Colorado Search and Rescue.
