Boulder County, Colo. - There are many projects in and around Colorado Highway 119/Diagonal Highway impacting all modes of travel this fall and winter. Project teams from CDOT, Boulder County, and the City of Boulder are coordinating to limit travel disruptions and delays as much as possible while ensuring safety for construction workers and travelers. Ongoing projects include:
- CO 119 Safety, Mobility, and Bikeway Project (CDOT): On the Diagonal Highway between Jay Road in Boulder to Hover Street in Longmont, to improve all modes of travel and make transit travel faster and more reliable.
- North 95th Street (Valmont Road to Lookout Road) Reconstruction and Flood Resiliency Improvements Project (Boulder County): Road reconstruction and improvements to protect both the road and surrounding open space properties from damage during flood events. This is the final segment of a multi-year effort to reconstruct North 95th Street between Lafayette and Longmont.
- 63rd Street Waterline Replacement Project (City of Boulder): On 63rd Street between CO 119 and Jay Road, this peoject will replace aging infrastructure with newer, more easily maintained waterlines to improve water distribution resilience. One of the new waterlines will also be twice as large as the previous waterline, helping meet increased demand for drinking water serving the Gunbarrel community.
- 75th Street and Jay Road Main Sewer Improvements (City of Boulder): Near 75th Street and Jay Road, to bolster the resiliency of the sewer system serving Gunbarrel.
- Four Mile Creek Trail Underpass to connect Cottonwood trail/LoBo (Boulder County): This new underpass will provide cyclists and pedestrians safe connections from the City of Boulder trail network to Cottonwood Trail and the LoBo trail. (Partly grant funded and partly from the regional trails/transportation sales tax).
What Will the Projects Do?
- The road and trail projects will improve safety for all travelers by decreasing traffic crashes and will provide people with more affordable and sustainable transportation choices.
- Water and sewer line projects improve and/or maintain access to clean drinking water and maintain Boulder’s ability to treat wastewater.
Why Are There So Many Projects Now?
There are several reasons why so many projects are happening right now:
- The CO 119 team received state and federal safety grant money for this important work to improve safety for all travelers.
- Water and sewer improvement projects take many years to plan and fund, with the exact start date being dependent on many factors.
- Most construction near irrigation ditches and creeks often need to occur during the winter when there is less demand for ditch water and less water flowing in creeks.
