Boulder County Commissioner Matt Jones

(Boulder County, Colo. -- Jan. 8, 2019) -- Matt Jones of Louisville was sworn into office today as the newest member of the Boulder County Board of Commissioners joining fellow commissioners Deb Gardner and Elise Jones.

Matt was elected in November 2018 and holds a term that runs through January 2023. He resides in District 3 (see County Commissioners’ District map).

“I am honored and excited to have the opportunity to serve as county commissioner,” Commissioner Matt Jones said after being sworn in on Tuesday by Chief Judge Ingrid Bakke. “I look forward to serving residents so that we can keep Boulder County such a special place.”

Before joining the Board of County Commissioners, Matt served for six years as the Colorado State Senator for District 17 (Longmont, Lafayette, Louisville, and Erie). Prior to becoming a state senator, he served three terms in the Colorado House, from 1986 to 1992, and returned for a fourth term from 2010 to 2012.

His most recent state legislative highlights include:

• In 2017, Matt Jones served as a member of the Agriculture, Natural Resources, & Energy Committee; the Select Committee on Energy and the Environment; the Water Resources Review Committee; Wildfire Matters Interim Committee; and the Legislative (leadership) Council.
• In 2016, he was named Deputy Minority Leader for Conservation, Clean Energy, and Climate Change.
• In 2015, he was Conservation Colorado's 2015 Legislator of the Year.

Matt is best known for his environmental passion, his legislative experience, and his 18 years of helping to plan and lead the City of Boulder’s Open Space & Mountain Parks Department. A part of his open space work, Matt was a wildland firefighter working prescribed fires and some wildland fires including the Fourmile and Walker Fires. He was a pro mogul skier in his 20s.

He is a two-time cancer survivor, which he credits for helping him “face adversity, keep hope, and find solutions to come back stronger” when faced with pressing challenges.
Matt is committed to keeping Boulder County a leader on climate action, public land conservation, transportation, and education.

In his downtime, Matt and his wife Shari enjoy hiking and skiing. Together they have one grown daughter who lives in Denver. Matt has a B.A. in Political Science and an M.A. in Political Science, Natural Resource Policy Program, both from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins. He has lived in Colorado since 1968 and in Boulder County since 1993.

Seven elected officials sworn in at County Reorganization

Seven elected officials were sworn into office today by Boulder County 20th Judicial District Chief Judge Ingrid Bakke: They include:

• Assessor Cindy Braddock (previously appointed to the office)
• District Attorney Michael Dougherty (previously appointed to the office)
• Clerk & Recorder Molly Fitzpatrick
• Coroner Emma Hall (re-elected)
• County Commissioner Matt Jones
• Sheriff Joe Pelle (re-elected)
• Surveyor Lee Stadele (re-elected)

As part of the county’s Reorganization, the Board of County Commissioners selected Commissioner Elise Jones to serve as Chair and Commissioner Deb Gardner to serve as Vice-Chair of the Board of County Commissioners for 2019.

Public hears 2019 State of the County Address

Also this morning, the county commissioners presented the annual State of the County Address (video). The address reflects on the successes of the past year and looks forward to the goals for 2019. The address was compiled from interviews of all department heads and elected officials.

The Boulder County Commissioners Hearing Room is filled with elected officials, their family and guests, and members of the public who turned out to view the 2019 State of the County Address.

Commissioners' Office debuts new online public meeting web streaming and video archiving platform

The Commissioners’ Office has launched a new automated online meeting agenda and video streaming system for public meetings and hearings.

The new system, called MinuteTraq, is a cloud-hosted software solution designed specifically for governments to spend less time managing the manual artifacts of the public meeting process by streamlining and automating the agenda creation workflow and updating web streaming capabilities.

In the past, Boulder County created its agenda through a manual process and delivered a printed meeting packet to each commissioner for every meeting. Now, the agenda process is paperless, meets best practices, and increases transparency for Boulder County residents. Also, members of the public are able to view all supporting documentation for agenda items.

Other advantages of the new system include improved video quality from our new web streaming capabilities and the ability to web stream utilizing multiple browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and others. To keep up with handheld technology, the public now has the ability to stream through portable devices such as smartphones and tablets.
