Lost hikers assisted down the Royal Arch Trail in Chautauqua Park, Boulder County, Colorado

Two lost hikers and their dog were escorted uninjured from the Royal Arch Trail

Boulder County, Colo.

On March 12th, 2019, at about 9:30 p.m., members with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group (RMR), Front Range Rescue Dogs and the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Rangers were dispatched to Chautauqua Park, 900 Baseline Road, on the report of lost hikers on the Royal Arch Trail.

The hikers used their cell phone to call 911 when they found themselves off the trail and unsure of their location. They were reported to be near the top of the Royal Arch trail and unprepared for the changing weather.

Rescuers with RMR, Front Range Rescue Dogs and the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks were able to locate the hikers. Rescuers also assisted in recovering the hikers' dog after it had become stuck in a snow gully.

Rescuers used a hand line to ascend and descend the gully; successfully recovering the uninjured dog. The hiking couple and their dog were escorted safely to the trailhead parking lot without injury.

This incident is documented under Boulder County Sheriff's Office case report number 19-1398.
