$750,000 award will help Lafayette preserve affordable homes in partnership with the City of Boulder

Boulder County, Colo. - The first funding awards from Boulder County’s new Affordable and Attainable Housing Tax will be used to help boost affordable homeownership in Lafayette. Boulder County announced this week that it is dedicating $750,000 in capital funding from the tax to help the City of Lafayette and City of Boulder purchase and renovate two homes in Lafayette so they can remain affordable.

The City of Boulder will add both homes, previously owned by the Boulder County Housing Authority, to its Regional Affordable Homeownership Program, in which homes are sold at below-market-rate prices to buyers who qualify due to income.

“The voter-approved Affordable and Attainable Housing Tax creates opportunities to address the rising housing costs which puts home ownership out of each for so many people,” said Boulder County Commissioner Marta Loachamin. “This first funding award is a great example of how we can work together with local government partners to support people to become homeowners. We look forward to future opportunities to create more affordable and attainable housing in Boulder County.”

About 65 percent of the available revenues from the Affordable and Attainable Housing Tax go each year toward development and preservation of affordable housing, with the remaining 35 percent toward services to help people maintain housing and prevent homelessness. The development funds for affordable housing are divided proportionately by population across the county with 30 percent of the funds going to Longmont, 32 percent to Boulder, and 38 percent for the rest of Boulder County.

Funding Awards

An additional $1.1 million in Affordable and Attainable Housing Tax funds are also being used to support the phase 2 work of the Willoughby Corner development in Lafayette.

Boulder County expects to award additional funds through the rest of the year for a variety of affordable projects in Longmont, Boulder, Lyons, and Louisville, among other locations. The Boulder County Housing Department will propose funding awards for 2026 to Boulder County Commissioners this fall.

Each year, Boulder County Commissioners also seek requests from qualified nonprofit and housing agencies for part of $500,000 in awards from an Innovation Fund, which supports creative ideas for boosting affordable housing. This year’s awards will be announced soon.

About the Affordable and Attainable Housing Tax

During the 2023 General Election, Boulder County voters approved an extension of an existing .185% sales and use tax with 71% of the vote. The 15-year initiative uses a portion of sales tax revenue to help fund affordable and attainable housing and related support services within Boulder County, such as:

• the costs of development, operation, acquisition, preservation, renovation, maintenance, and construction of for-sale and rental homes for low and moderate income households and local workforce
• supportive housing
• services that support housing stability
• grants to housing authorities, nonprofit affordable housing providers, and local municipalities
