Broomfield family spends night out near summit of Meadow Mountain

Boulder County, Colo. - On Saturday, June 10, 2020 at approximately 8:26 p.m. the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a family hiking in the area of Saint Vrain Mountain in Boulder County who had become lost. The call was forwarded to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the Emergency Services began working on the call. On Sunday rescue teams were dispatched to the area to begin searching.

The father and mother, 25-years-old and 30-years-old respectively and their two children, seven and ten-years-old, began hiking cross-country from their car at approximately 3:00 p.m. and eventually lost their way at approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening when they decided to call 911. As best as they could tell, they spent the night on the south side of Saint Vrain Mountain, starting a fire to keep warm. Meanwhile, searchers began searching the drainage and the north side of Saint Vrain Mountain in the early hours of Sunday morning.

When daylight hit, the family began hiking back up over the ridge, heading back to the drainage where they started. At approximately 8:00 a.m., at the request of the incident commander, Med Evac sent an air ambulance to assist in the search. At approximately 9:19 a.m. helicopter crew spotted the family near the top of the ridge. The vehicle of the family was located at the end of the Rock Creek Road/Ski Road at approximately 12:04 a.m. A rescuer on the helicopter was dropped off in the area and evaluated the family. It was decided that the family could walk back to the car with guidance of rescuers.

Approximately 48 individuals assisted in the search from the following agencies: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Allenspark Fire Protection District, Front Range Rescue Dogs, Med Evac, Larimer County Search and Rescue and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.

The associated Boulder County Sheriff's Office case number is: #20-2605.
