Voter Eligibility Requirements

In order to vote in Colorado, you must be:

A U.S. citizen

A Colorado resident for at least 22 days before the election

Must not be serving a sentence of confinement or detention for a felony conviction (NOTE: Those on probation or parole ARE ELIGIBLE to vote.)

Age Requirements:

16-year-olds and 17-year-olds can preregister to vote

18-year-olds can register and vote in any election.

3 Ways to Register to Vote or Update your Registration

Be sure to check the registration requirements on this page prior to registering. A registered voter in Colorado is considered a resident of Colorado for income tax and motor vehicle registration and operation.

Qualified residents may register to vote up to and including Election Day. However, in order to receive a ballot in the mail, the Boulder County Clerk & Recorder’s office must receive your voter registration no later than 8 days before the election. If you register after this time, you must visit a Vote Center in order to vote.

Registration/updates will take effect as of the postmark date on the form. (If postmark is not legible, the effective date is the date received by the office.)

Register In-Person

Register to vote or update your registration year-round at any of our three Boulder County Clerk and Recorder offices.

During election periods, eligible residents may also register to vote at any Vote Center.

There is no deadline to register to vote in Colorado. However, in order to receive a mail ballot, your registration must be received at least 8 days before the election. If you miss this deadline, you can register and get a ballot on the same day at a Vote Center.

If you will be out-of-town during an election, you can have your ballot mailed to your temporary address by updating the mailing address in your voter registration. This must be done at least 8 days before the election. Don’t forget to update your address again once you return!
