3 Ways to Register to Vote or Update your Registration

Be sure to check the registration requirements on this page prior to registering. A registered voter in Colorado is considered a resident of Colorado for income tax and motor vehicle registration and operation.

Qualified residents may register to vote up to and including Election Day. However, in order to receive a ballot in the mail, the Boulder County Clerk & Recorder’s office must receive your voter registration no later than 8 days before the election. If you register after this time, you must visit a Vote Center in order to vote.

Attention CU students living on campus – please see our College Students page for instructions about how to enter your address so your mail ballots can find you.

A U.S. citizen

A Colorado resident for at least 22 days before the election

Must not be serving a sentence of confinement or detention for a felony conviction (NOTE: Those on probation or parole ARE ELIGIBLE to vote.)

Age Requirements:

16-year-olds and 17-year-olds can preregister to vote

18-year-olds can vote in any election.

While you do not need to have a Colorado ID, CO Driver’s License or other form of acceptable ID in order to register, you must produce this documentation the first time you vote by mail and/or every time you vote in-person. Thus, it is recommended to provide this documentation during the registration process to avoid needing to mail in a form of identification when you vote your mail ballot. Visit the Secretary of State list of Acceptable Forms of Identification.

More Info

There is no deadline to register to vote in Colorado. However, in order to receive a mail ballot, your registration must be received at least 8 days before the election. If you miss this deadline, you can register and get a ballot on the same day at a Vote Center.

If you will be out-of-town during an election, you can have your ballot mailed to your temporary address by updating the mailing address in your voter registration. This must be done at least 8 days before the election. Don’t forget to update your address again once you return!
