Fallen Climber in Eldorado CanyonState Park
Man Falls 20 Feet on the Red Garden Wall
Boulder County, Colo. - On Wednesday, August 14, 2019, about 3:25 p.m., the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a fallen climber in Eldorado Canyon State Park, located in unincorporated Boulder County.
A male climber in his mid to late 20’s was climbing the Yellow Spur route in an area called the Red Garden Wall. The climber was stretching out to reach a hand hold when he called for more slack in his climbing rope. When he reached for the hand hold he missed and fell about 20 feet before his climbing partner could take the slack out of the belay line. The climber suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries as a result of the fall. His climbing partner was able to call 911 and ultimately provide rescue personnel with their location, which expedited the rescue process.
Once on scene, rescue personnel began more advanced medical care. Additionally, personnel from multiple agencies worked together to coordinate the evacuation of the fallen climber. Due to the terrain, rescue personnel needed to complete a technical rescue, which took almost three hours. The climber was carried out on a litter to an awaiting ambulance and transported to an area hospital.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the rescue by the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Rocky Mountain Fire Authority, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
The associated Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case number is: #19-4695
