The 44-year-old inmate had been in-custody for drug and weapon charges

Boulder, Colo. - Just before 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, jail staff was notified of an emergency medical situation in a maximum-security module of the Boulder County Jail. A 39-year-old male inmate noticed a neighboring cellmate, a 44-year-old Loveland man, appeared to have hung himself. The neighboring cellmate called for help and then entered the man's cell to try and aid him until jail staff arrived.

Deputies and medical staff immediately responded and began rendering life-saving measures, including CPR, and were later joined by paramedics from the Boulder Fire Department and AMR Ambulance. Rescue personnel worked to revive the inmate for more than 30 minutes but to no avail. The inmate was pronounced deceased by a doctor just before 3:30 p.m.

The 44-year-old inmate had been in-custody since July 10 and was being held on drug and weapon-related charges. The inmate had given no prior indications that he was despondent or had suicidal ideations. The inmate was housed alone in the cell at the time. The identity of the inmate is not being publicly released until his family can be notified.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office and investigators from the Sheriff's Office are continuing to investigate the man's death, although no foul play is suspected. The coroner's office is responsible for determining the official cause and manner of the inmate's death and will publicly identify him once family notifications are completed.
