Boulder County, Colo. - On Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at approximately 11:50 p.m., the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about an injured hiker near Betty Lake, in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area.

A teenage male was backpacking with his family in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. During the evening hours, the hiker tripped and fell. He suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The family was fortunate enough to get a 911 call out on their cell phone. Family members were able to provide valuable information about their location, which aided rescue personnel in the search.

Once dispatched, rescue personnel began coordinating the search for the injured hiker. The rescue crews worked throughout the night to get to the hiker and provide medical aid. Once stabilized, he was flown, via helicopter, to a metro area hospital for further care. Rescue crews, made up of mostly volunteers, worked over eight hours to get the injured hiker, family members and equipment safely out of the backcountry.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the rescue by the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, the Nederland Fire Protection District, Grand County Search and Rescue and Flight for Life Colorado.
