Lyons man suffers injuries in recreational vehicle fire

The motor home appears to have caught fire during work on a heater

Lyons, Colo. - On April 13, 2019, at 8:00 p.m., the sheriff's communications center received a 911 call reporting a fire to a mobile home in the 100 block of County Road 69, just outside of Lyons. Emergency personnel arrived a short time later to find a fully-engulfed recreational motor home. The occupant of the motor home, a 56-year-old Lyons man, had been able to escape from inside, but when rescuers arrived they found him only 10-15 feet away from the burning RV, and a deputy and firefighter subsequently dragged him to safety. The man was later transported to a local hospital for smoke and fire-related injuries. As of this afternoon, he has not been released and continues to undergo treatment.

The blaze destroyed the motor home and damaged three cars and a house nearby. The initial investigation suggests that the fire was accidental and had been sparked by work the injured man was doing on a heater inside the RV.

It took firefighters from the Lyons Fire Protection District, Hygiene Fire Protection District, and Pinewood Springs Fire Protection District less than 15 minutes to knock down and contain the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and will officially be determined by the Lyons Fire Protection District and the Multi-Agency Fire Investigation Team (MAFIT), a team of specialized fire investigators and deputies from agencies across Boulder County.

The case number associated with this investigation is 19-2037.
