Apparent suicide at the Boulder County Jail
Jail inmate dies of apparent suicide, ongoing investigation with Sheriff's Office detectives and Boulder County Coroner's Office
Boulder County, Colo. - At 2:43 p.m. this afternoon, jail staff found an inmate who appeared to have hung himself while in his cell awaiting a court appearance.
Deputies and medical staff immediately responded and began rendering life-saving measures, including performing CPR and a using a defibrillator, and were later joined by paramedics from the Boulder Fire-Rescue and AMR Ambulance. Rescue personnel worked to revive the inmate for more than 30 minutes but to no avail. The inmate was pronounced deceased by AMR at 3:26 p.m.
The 39-year-old male had been booked into the Boulder County Jail on multiple charges, including first degree trespass. The inmate was in his cell by himself for approximately 20 minutes when staff entered the room and rendered medical aid. The inmate had given no prior indications that he was despondent or had suicidal ideations and was therefore not on suicide protocol.
The Boulder County Coroner's Office and investigators from the Sheriff's Office are continuing to investigate the man's death, although no foul play is suspected. The coroner's office is responsible for determining the official cause and manner of the inmate's death and will publicly identify him after family notifications are completed.
