Mining Museum Guide

Time Commitment & Minimum Age: Approximately 6 to 8 hours per month, depending on museum. New volunteers must attend a training. Must be at least 15 years old.

The Nederland Mining Museum or the James F. Bailey Assay Office Museum in Wallstreet

Program Summary:

Do you love sharing stories, talking with people, and have a passion for history? Volunteers are needed to help visitors explore and learn about mining history at the Nederland Mining Museum and the James F. Bailey Assay Office Museum.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Welcome and orient visitors to the site.
  • Interpret objects and mining history.
  • Answer visitor questions regarding the museum collection and local history.
  • Provide information about the area and nearby open spaces.
  • Lead educational programs for organized groups, such as schools, senior centers, and interest groups.
Qualifications and Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 15 years old. If under the age of 18, must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian during training and volunteer shifts.
  • Be comfortable speaking to a wide range of ages and audiences.
  • Have personal transportation.
  • Pass a criminal background check (18+).

Time Requirements for Volunteering at the James F. Bailey Assay Office Museum

  • Volunteer for two, four-hour shifts per season.
  • Museum is open May-October on the third Saturday of each month.

Time Requirements for Volunteering at the Nederland Mining Museum

  • Volunteer for two, three-hour shifts per month for the season.
  • Museum is open June-October on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Training Dates and Information:

After completion of the application, applicants will be contacted to take part in a new volunteer interview.

Trainings will then be scheduled for winter and/or spring depending on number of applicants.

Training generally consists of two 2-3 hour trainings, which can occur virtually or in person depending on group preference and scheduling.

Visiting the museums and interacting with other volunteers is highly recommended as part of the training process.
