Colorado law requires that all trailers be titled, registered and plated. To complete this process for the first time bring the following:
- Secure and Verifiable ID
- Colorado title (NOTE: see below if the trailer has documents from a state other than Colorado)*
- Paperwork if purchased from a Colorado dealer
*Trailers with documents from another state

Homemade & Kit Trailers
Applying for a trailer identification number for a homemade or kit trailer will require a Certified VIN Inspection by the State Highway Patrol in addition to providing the following documents and information as described below:
- Length
- Width
- Weight
- Value
- Type of trailer
- Receipts (for the kit or if parts or supplies were purchased to build the trailer)
- The owner or builder must sign an affidavit listing the trailer’s dimensions and stating how the trailer was put together
After this process is completed an identification number on a metal plate will be assigned for the trailer and must be attached to the front, right corner of the frame or nearest metal part.
