Press Release – Guilty Plea and Sentence in Careless Resulting In Death Case
Boulder County, Colo. - On July 8th of 2024, defendant Mary Landry was driving northbound on Via Appia Way and Sagebrush Way in Louisville. The victim, Judy Florian, was crossing the pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection. As Ms. Landry was entering the crosswalk, she apparently did not see Ms. Florian, and struck her with the front of her vehicle. Police found Ms. Florian laying in front of the vehicle with no shoes. They found one of her shoes in a nearby storm gutter. By the time police arrived, Ms. Florian did not have a pulse. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Three witnesses saw the collision and described Ms. Florian as being thrown between 12-15 feet from the impact. Evidence collected from Ms. Landry’s cell phone revealed that both her messaging app and the Pandora radio app were opened near the time of the collision. Multiple parties called 911, including Ms. Landry.
On July 10, 2025, Mary Landry pled guilty to careless driving resulting in death. She was sentenced to 300 hours of community service, an ISAE distracted driving course, a fine, and restorative justice at the discretion of the parties.
District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated, “This is a heartbreaking case, and it is a reminder of how fast lives can be changed. Our hearts go out to Judy Florian’s family. We are grateful to them for their strength and courage throughout this difficult process. Nothing will bring Judy Florian back, but we hope this plea and sentence brings some closure to them. Even though the defendant was sober and driving the speed limit, this case demonstrates the tragic consequences of distracted driving. We worked closely with the victim’s family throughout this process.”
