Press Release – Grand Jury Indictment – Motor Vehicle Thefts
Boulder County, Colo. -Following a multi-agency investigation, a crime ring that targeted the front range has been brought to a halt. For the past 18 months, members of this criminal enterprise committed crimes in over twenty-five (25) different jurisdictions in the State of Colorado, which has resulted in indictments on 26 Burglaries and 15 Motor Vehicle Thefts, and many other offenses. This crime ring has been responsible for over $828,880.60 in stolen property and $39,880.00 in property damage, which affected over 55 victims.
Due to an extensive investigation conducted by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Louisville Police Department, Longmont Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder Police Department, the Boulder County Drug Task Force, and our District Attorney’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office announced today the indictment of four (4) adults for violations of the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA), a class two felony, along with other charges and the indictment of a two other defendants for lesser offenses.
This crime ring conspired to steal motor vehicles along the front range and take them to a chop shop. The stolen cars were then re-titled using fraudulent documents and registered to a business run by members of the criminal enterprise, MMZ International LLC.
The stolen cars were then used to commit garage burglaries and vehicle trespasses throughout the front range. The crime ring entered vehicles in the early hours of the morning to steal wallets, purses, backpacks, as well as garage door openers. They used garage door openers to enter the victims’ garages. The crime ring often armed themselves with bear spray, which would be used if met with resistance from a homeowner. Once inside a garage, the ring targeted high-end bicycles. After completing the thefts, the enterprise took any stolen debit and credit cards to large retail stores and used them to buy gift cards. Then, they took the stolen bikes to a secondary location where they would be loaded up into a van, transported to Mexico, and re-sold.
In addition, the enterprise also possessed large distribution level amounts of Methamphetamine. Efforts previously made to apprehend members of the enterprise by various law enforcement agencies resulted in high-speed chases.
The following indicted members of criminal enterprise have been taken into custody with the following case numbers and bond amounts:
Kimberly Salas (DOB: 9/12/1995) remains at large.
Adrian Martinez, Kimberly Salas, Chloe Martinez, and Ryan See face a sentence of up to twenty-four years in prison on the COCCA, class two felony charges as well as additional prison sentences for the felony theft charges; Carlos Marquez faces a sentence of up to six years in prison on the Motor Vehicle Theft charge, class four felony; Lorena Marquez-Perez faces a sentence of up to three years on the Chop Shop Activity charge.
District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated, “This group had a severe impact on the front range. These types of property offenses are often committed by organized crime rings. So, it takes multi-agency coordination and tireless efforts to bring them to justice. Different agencies came together and worked hard to make this indictment possible. I appreciate the outstanding work of the investigators and prosecutors; they dedicated a ton of time, energy, and expertise to it. We will fight for justice for the many victims.”
District Attorney Michael Dougherty and Boulder County Sheriff Public Information Officer Vinnie Montez will speak with the media at 400 pm today outside the Justice Center (1777 6th Street, Boulder, CO 80302).
As in every criminal case, these charges are merely an accusation, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
