Press Release – District Attorney’s Office Highlights New Language Access Services

Boulder County, Colo. -The District Attorney’s Office is committed to ensuring equitable access to justice for all. In 2024, the District Attorney secured funding from Boulder County for a dedicated Interpreter/Translator. Our office filled this position in October 2024.

The Spanish-speaking Interpreter/Translator position has quickly proved invaluable to the DA’s Office. Below are his key accomplishments in 2025:

From January 1, 2025, through November 13, 2025, our Interpreter/ Translator has provided extensive interpretation and translation services to support victims, witnesses, and staff.

Accomplishments in 2025:

  • Document Translation (Created new version of Legal Documents for better understanding):
    • 98 legal documents translated (approximately 66,218 words)
    • 256 additional documents translated (approximately 115,443 words)
  • Meetings Interpreted: 137 (average 2 hours each)
  • Phone Calls and Lobby Walk-Ins: 17 (calls average 1 hour; walk-ins average 2 hours)
  • Simultaneous Live Presentations: 2 (approximately 2 hours each, including one virtual and one in-person, including writing out full transcripts for closed captioning)
  • Court Translations/Summaries for Victims/Witnesses: 14 (can range from 3 to 5 hours each)
  • Repatriation Coordination: Assisted with repatriation of remains to Venezuela through Colombia
  • Video Transcription (Spanish to English): 30 hours (body-worn camera, interviews, evidence, etc.)
  • Jail Calls: 317 calls (average 5 to 15 minutes per call with the majority transcribed into English)

This staff member has relieved other, bilingual staff of translating documents and meetings outside of their regular duties.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated, “The impact of this new position reflects our ongoing commitment to access to justice and strong, equitable support for those navigating the justice system. It is a much needed and positive step. I am grateful to Boulder County and the District Attorney staff who helped fill this need for our office and the community.”
