Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County Human Services has awarded $477,276 over two years to Imagine!, a local organization that supports people with disabilities. The money will be used to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), autism, and brain injury find and maintain housing.
With the money, Imagine! will hire two full-time staff members to provide housing help. Of the two staff, one will work with Boulder Housing Partners, the City of Boulder’s housing authority. The other will focus on the Longmont area, partnering with the Longmont Housing Authority and HOPE, a nonprofit serving the unhoused.
In addition to housing assistance, the program will support people as they move into their homes and assist them in building life skills. These services are designed to help people live more independently and avoid homelessness.
Funding for this grant comes from Boulder County’s IDD Mill Levy, a property tax that was first approved by voters in 2002. The tax helps fill funding gaps for local programs for individuals with IDD, autism, and brain injury when state or federal dollars are not enough.
“We’re excited to support a program that helps people with disabilities live as independently as possible,” said Rebecca Seiden, Boulder County’s IDD Mill Levy Program Coordinator. “This new program will help people not only find homes they can afford but also remain in them.”
“We often hear from the people we support that finding safe, affordable housing feels impossible without help,” said Jodi Walters, Chief Executive Officer at Imagine!. “This funding allows us to be present where housing decisions are made — at housing authorities, with property managers, and in the community — to make sure people with disabilities aren’t left behind”
This grant was inspired by the Boulder County IDD Needs Assessment, which showed that housing is the most urgent need for people with IDD, autism, and brain injury. Completed in 2018, the assessment also highlighted the importance of clear housing information, personalized support, and long-term housing stability.
