Public Service Recognition

Photo of Jessica Villena Sanchez

Our very own Mobility for All’s Bilingual Programs Coordinator Jessica Villena-Sanchez was highlighted in BCNet for National Public Service Recognition Week this month.

Why did you choose public service?

I work for Mobility for All and I chose public service because I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to move safely and with dignity. Helping others find the resources they need to get where they need to go fills me with purpose. I see the gaps and barriers in our transportation systems, and I feel a strong responsibility to stand alongside the communities most disconnected. Public service gives me the opportunity to be a part of a bigger purpose and the tools to break down transportation barriers! What are you most proud of in your work?

I am proud to identify as Mexican and as an immigrant. Helping Spanish-speaking immigrants overcome transportation barriers makes me feel connected and fulfilled. I love being able to speak Spanish while representing Boulder County, and showing people the caring, human side of local government. Earning the trust of my community is one of the things I am most proud of in my work.

What is a memorable story that stuck with you?

One of my favorite memories from last year was helping a woman at an EcoPass pop-up event at a BCHA location in Longmont. She spoke Spanish and was worried about the switch from a physical EcoPass card to a QR code on her phone. I helped her set up her new pass, and she was so grateful. She told me she never learned how to drive and that she takes the bus every day to get to work and was so happy that the County made it free for her. Talking with her felt like reconnecting with a distant family member, it reminded me why this work matters so much.

CDOT Telephone Town Halls

The Colorado Department of Transportation is taking a fresh look at Colorado’s transportation investment priorities and building a plan that helps deliver those priorities for the next 10 years.

None of that will be done without the input of Coloradans, something that happens through dozens of outreach events around the state, allowing thousands of people to share their views on what CDOT's priorities should be. This is why the end result is called Your Transportation Plan.
