Man found dead in South St. Vrain Canyon after a brief search

The body of a missing 28-year-old Longmont man was found early this morning; no foul play is suspected

Lyons, Colo. - Just after 10:00 p.m. on January 21st, sheriff's deputies were asked to attempt to locate a vehicle associated with a missing 28-year-old Longmont man who was last believed to be in the area of the South St. Vrain Canyon. Deputies subsequently found the unattended vehicle along the side of the road in the 25,000 block of South St. Vrain Drive. Deputies, with the assistance of Longmont police officers, conducted a hasty search but were unable to locate any sign of the missing man in the dark.

This morning, just after 7:00 a.m., additional search efforts were undertaken in the area. At approximately 8:45 a.m., rescuers, with the assistance of a sheriff's bloodhound, located a body at the bottom of a drainage basin, approximately 1/8 of a mile north of the vehicle. It is believed the body is that of the missing Longmont man.

The preliminary on-scene investigation suggests the man suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and no foul play is suspected. The body of the man had to be removed by a littered technical rescue, which was undertaken by the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.

The man's death remains under investigation by the sheriff's office and the Boulder County Coroner's Office. The coroner's office is responsible for determining the cause and manner of the man's death, as well as confirming the identity of the decedent.

The associated sheriff's case report number is 20-377, and the corresponding Longmont PD case report number is 20-668.
