Identification Update - Stone Canyon Fire

Boulder County, Colo. -

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office is actively working to identify an individual whose remains were discovered as a result of the Stone Canyon Fire that started on July 30, 2024, outside of the town of Lyons, Colorado. This identification process presents significant challenges due to the condition of the remains.

During a fire, skeletal remains undergo severe changes, including dehydration, fragmentation, color alteration, and loss of organic material. These conditions complicate the extraction of viable DNA samples, which are often the only reliable method for identification in such cases.

“The integrity of the bones is significantly compromised after a fire, making it extremely difficult to obtain usable DNA,” said Jeff Martin, Boulder County Coroner. “In addition, locating a living family member for comparative DNA analysis can further complicate and delay the process. We are dedicated to overcoming these challenges and are utilizing every available resource to assist in this identification effort.”

The Coroner’s Office is working closely with forensic experts and law enforcement to address these complexities and expedite the identification process. As they proceed, the office remains committed to providing updates and ensuring transparency with the public.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office is dedicated to determining the cause and manner of death for individuals within Boulder County. Our team of professionals works to provide accurate and timely information while upholding the highest standards of forensic science and public service.
