Free Backyard Compost Workshops July 18 and 23
Resource Conservation offering one virtual and one in-person session this summer
Boulder County, Colo. - Free compost workshops are back. The Public Works Department’s Resource Conservation Division (RCD) will be offering one virtual and one in-person session this summer season.
- Virtual workshop - Monday, July 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. via Zoom.
- In-person workshop - Saturday, July 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Boulder County Recycling Center’s Education Room, 1901 63rd St, Boulder, CO 80301
These free workshops are open to anyone interested in learning how to successfully start and manage a backyard compost pile in Colorado. Backyard composting is an effective way to reduce a household’s carbon footprint and provide quality compost for use in gardens. Learn how to start and maintain a highly efficient backyard compost system by knowing what to feed your compost pile, appropriate bins and methods for our geographical region, tips and troubleshooting, and more. These workshops are hosted by RCD and taught by Melanie Nehls Burow, a Colorado Master Composter. Compost Bins for Sale
Melanie suggests using Soilsaver bins for your backyard composting adventure. RCD will have these bins available for purchase before the in-person workshop from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the County Recycling Center, 1901 63rd St. in Boulder. The bins will be offered at cost for $65. Personal check or exact cash only. If you can’t attend the compost workshop but would still like a bin, send an email to compostbins@bouldercounty.org to set up a time to pick one up.
The Soilsaver Classic compost bin provides an easy way to convert common yard and food waste into compost. This is a large capacity compost bin which will work great for a household of up to five people. In addition, the locking lid helps to keep pests out. The quarter-inch thick structural foam and black recycled plastic is built to last and hold heat inside. The lid is designed to collect rainwater to keep the compost moist.
