Fatal Twin-Engine Plane Crash Near Brainard Drive

Boulder County, Colo. - A twin-engine airplane crashed into a field near Brainard Drive and Midway Boulevard in unincorporated Boulder County shortly after 10:00 a.m. today, May 17, 2025.

The plane had taken off from the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport and had contacted the air traffic control tower to report they were having an issue and the plane was attempting to return to the airport at the time of the crash. There were no survivors from the plane, but it is not yet known at this time how many people were on board at the time of the crash.

The crash also started a small grass fire in the field, but it was quickly extinguished by North Metro firefighters.

The field where the airplane crashed is part of an open space property with an agriculture closure, so we are requesting that people do not approach the crash site. Boulder County Sheriff’s Office personnel will remain on-scene overnight to secure the crash site.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Safety Transportation Board will be investigating the cause of the crash.

The identification of the decedent(s) will be released by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office once identification has been determined and next of kin has been notified.

The following agencies responded to the airplane crash: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, North Metro Fire Rescue District, Boulder County Open Space, Broomfield Police Department, Boulder County Coroner’s Office, Federal Aviation Administration and the National Safety Transportation Board.

The associated Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case number is: 25-02367.
