Boulder County, Colo. – The Boulder County Commissioners have approved more than $1.6 million in funding through the Spring 2025 cycle of the Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant (SFMG) program. These awards, made to local fire districts, municipalities, and community groups, will support a new round of wildfire mitigation projects across the county. The grants will be matched by more than $2.1 million from partner agencies, expanding the scope and impact of the work.

Many of this cycle’s funded projects build on previous mitigation efforts, enabling Boulder County to increase the pace and scale of fuels reduction and forest health treatments across public and private lands.

A total of seven grants were approved for funding this spring. Recipients include:

  • Boulder Mountain Fire Protection District
  • Boulder Watershed Collective (2 projects)
  • City of Boulder, Open Space and Mountain Parks
  • City of Longmont
  • Four Mile Fire Protection District
  • Sunshine Fire Protection District

Since the program’s launch in November 2023, the county has invested nearly $5.8 million, which has in turn leveraged over $7.8 million in additional funding from other grants, homeowners’ associations, and private landowners. Together, these funds are supporting work on more than 2,300 acres of forest and grasslands, with over 700 acres already treated. These efforts are making Boulder County communities safer, landscapes more resilient, and emergency response more effective in the face of growing wildfire risk.

“Wildfire risk is one of the most urgent challenges we face as a community,” said Commissioner Ashley Stotzmann. “Through the Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant program we're not only accelerating critical on-the-ground work—we're also strengthening partnerships with local fire districts, landowners, and nonprofits who are essential to this effort.”

About the Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant Program

The Boulder County Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant Program supports large landscape and community-wide forest and grassland management projects to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, protect water supplies, and promote resilient ecosystems. The program is funded by the county’s Wildfire Mitigation Tax, approved by voters in November 2022.
