Animal-Borne Disease Control Program

Weekly Animal-Borne Disease Reporting

The Boulder County Public Health Vector Control Program aims to prevent the spread of disease from vectors (animals) to humans.

Week 35: August 25 – 31, 2024

Rabies

  • One bat was submitted for testing. Results are pending.
  • Boulder County has had seven positive rabies specimens to date, all bats.
  • Statewide, 47 bats and two domestic animals have tested positive for rabies in 2024.
  • In 2023, 55 specimens tested positive statewide for rabies: Bat (47), Skunk (8).

Mosquitoes

  • Nuisance (non-vector) mosquito counts were over 3,000 below the five-year average for the week.
  • Culex (vector) mosquito counts were approximately 1,000 less than the five-year average for the week.
  • Boulder County recorded two positive West Nile Virus pools this week.
  • 407 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) have been reported nationwide. To date, 30 human cases of WNV have been reported in Colorado: Adams (3), Arapahoe (3), Boulder (2), Broomfield (3), Delta (2), Denver (1), El Paso (1), Jefferson (2), Kit Carson (1), La Plata (1), Larimer (3), Mesa (1), and Weld (7).
  • Statewide, in 2023, 634 cases of WNV were reported, with 51 deaths. Boulder County recorded 29 cases.

Plague/Tularemia/Hantavirus

  • No specimens were submitted for plague, tularemia, or hantavirus.
