Boulder County, Colo. - The Boulder County Communications Center received a phone call on June 11, from a concerned friend who reported that a friend was overdue from returning from a hike in the Hessie area. Shortly after we received that call, we also were notified that a handheld GPS device’s SOS function had been activated from the hiker, just after 9:30 p.m.

A 34-year-old woman from Denver had been hiking and ended up in the dark without a working headlamp. Unable to safely navigate back to the trail head where her vehicle was parked, she decided to use her GPS device to request assistance.

The hiker was located by search and rescue teams roughly 3 miles west of the Hessie trail head, near King Lake. She was on the South Fork Middle Boulder Creek Trail, or the area commonly referred to as the Hessie Trail. They helped guide her back to the trail head, which they reach at approximately 2:30 a.m. The hiker sustained no injuries and was able to walk to out on her own, with assistance.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group assisted with this call.
