Brief pursuit results in vehicle crash

A stolen Volvo eluding a deputy crashes into another vehicle south of Longmont

Niwot, Colo. - On March 12, just before 10:30 a.m., sheriff's deputies received information from the Boulder Police Department that a 2007 gray Volvo had eluded them in North Boulder. A Boulder officer had attempted to contact the driver for speeding, but the vehicle fled and was last seen eastbound on the Diagonal Highway; the Boulder officer did not pursue.

Approximately ten minutes later, the vehicle passed a sheriff's deputy who was westbound on Lookout Road near 95th Street. As the deputy turned around and began to follow it, the driver turned northbound on Highway 287 and attempted to elude the deputy. The vehicle ran the red light at Highway 287 and Highway 52, striking a Subaru Forester traveling eastbound through the intersection.

Deputies subsequently arrested the driver of the Volvo, Amanda Marie Alonzo, 37, a transient with ties to Adams County. Alonzo was charged with felony aggravated motor vehicle theft, two counts of felony vehicular eluding, misdemeanor reckless driving, misdemeanor driving under revocation, and possession of drug paraphernalia. It was determined that the Volvo had been reported stolen in Castle Rock on March 11.

Both Alonzo and her passenger, a 34-year-old Frederick man, were uninjured in the crash. The passenger was interviewed at the scene and released without criminal charges. The driver of the Subaru Forester, a 28-year-old Boulder man, received minor injuries and was medically treated and released at the scene.

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash. Sheriff's detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the auto theft and if Alonzo is connected to any other crimes locally or across the Denver metro area. As such, her booking photo is not available for release.

The case number associated with this investigation is 20-1353.
