Temporary Election Positions

Boulder County holds elections every November. In even years, primary elections are held in June, and every four years we also hold primary elections in March. As you might guess, it takes a lot of people to make all of these elections happen! We typically start hiring for temporary election positions about two months before each election.

• Short-term election positions (judges and workers) include vote center operations, ballot processing, computer operators, and ballot reception jobs.
• Work hours and days vary for each position.
• Some positions run several weeks for a single election; other positions may only require only a 2-3 day commitment; and we even have Election Day-only roles.
• Most positions pay $21.44 per hour.

Hiring Process Overview

Per statute, for most election positions (judges), please know that our office must first hire from names provided by the Boulder County Party Chairs. We begin hiring judges after we have received recommended judge lists from the local Democratic and Republican party chairs (about 6-8 weeks out from each election). Once we get these lists, we send out information to these groups of people including descriptions of the available judge positions and schedule commitments.

When these lists are exhausted, we are then able to reach out to others who have expressed interest in working with Boulder County Elections, including unaffiliated and minor party member voters. We’ll send information about the non-judge positions available including schedule commitments.

Student Democracy Program

We hire local high school students (juniors and seniors, ages 16 and 17) to serve as Student Election Judges for every election.

This is a great opportunity for students to gain firsthand knowledge about democracy and the electoral process, all while getting paid!

• No political conversations of any kind allowed with co-workers or voters while working or on break; we are a neutral zone.
• Boulder County employees including temporary employees are paid on the last business day of the month. A check will be mailed to you.
• You must complete all paperwork before start date in order to be paid.
• All employees must join PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association); 9% of your check will go towards PERA. You are welcome to request the money back from PERA after you receive your last paycheck. A PERA refund could take 30-90 days.
• Personal items such as cell phones, purses, backpacks, jackets etc. need to be stored away from your work area while you work.
