Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County is inviting students, families, school staff, and community members to help shape safer and more comfortable travel to and from school through Safe Streets for Students, a regional Safe Routes to School planning initiative.

The project aims to improve transportation safety for students attending public schools in the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) and St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD). By examining crash history, crash risk, existing infrastructure, demographic information, and community feedback, Safe Streets for Students will identify schools with the greatest transportation safety needs.

“Community input is essential,” said Melissa Hunter, Mobility for All Programs Coordinator. “Crash data alone cannot show every place where students may feel uncomfortable walking, biking, or rolling. Feedback from students, parents, and teachers will help us identify those locations and inform solutions that work for different schools and communities. Let’s keep students safe on their way to school, while adding some fun and joy!”

Ways to Get Involved

• Take the Online Survey: Share your experiences traveling to and from school and highlight transportation safety issues that matter most to you.
• Visit the Virtual Open House: Learn more about the project and provide input online at your convenience.
• Explore and Add to the Interactive Map: Identify specific locations where you feel unsafe or believe safety could be improved for biking, walking, or rolling to school.
• Play the Safe Streets Builder Minecraft Game: Students, you have a voice too! Build a safer street and share your ideas through the Safe Streets Builder Minecraft Game.
• Chat with the project team at a Community Pop-Up Event: Follow Mobility for All on social media to find out where you can find us!

What Will Safe Streets for Students Do?

Safe Streets for Students will use technical analyses and community input to identify schools with the greatest transportation safety needs. The project will develop tailored action plans for 5–10 priority schools, including recommendations for infrastructure, programs, and policies.

A transportation safety toolkit will also be created for all public PreK–12 schools in BVSD and SVVSD, providing resources for school and municipality staff to develop Safe Streets for Students Action Plans suited to their communities.

Potential strategies may include enhanced pedestrian crossings, bicycle lanes, walking school buses, crossing guards, and policies addressing school bus stops and pick-up/drop-off management.

Why Safe Routes to School Matters

Making trips to school safer benefits students and the broader community. Walking and biking support health, fitness, academic performance, and independence, while safer options help reduce congestion and pollution around schools.

Safe Streets for Students is a partnership among jurisdictions within the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley school district areas. The project is funded by the Colorado Department of Transportation, with local matching funds from Boulder County, City and County of Broomfield, Weld County, Town of Erie, City of Boulder, City of Longmont, and City of Louisville.

The project began in spring 2026 and will continue through fall 2027.
