Vehicle Crash Near State Highway 287 and Vermillion Road
Boulder County, Colo. - The following statement is provided by the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office regarding the circumstances that preceded a vehicle crash near State Highway 287 and Vermillion Road:
“On December 25, 2025 around 3 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a man in crisis who was driving recklessly. Multiple citizens also called 9-1-1 to report the vehicle for endangering the public and driving 100+ miles per hour through southwest Fort Collins, Loveland, and unincorporated Larimer County. The driver was suspected of possible impairment and believed to have caused a crash.
Deputies located the vehicle in Loveland. They tried to stop it using tire spikes, but the driver continued and they lost sight of the vehicle. Deputies did not pursue. They received information that he was traveling south on Highway 287 toward the Larimer/Boulder County line, and Dispatch advised Longmont Public Safety.”
Subsequently, a Longmont Public Safety officer located the vehicle on State Highway 287 north of Vermillion Road. The vehicle was damaged and had come to a stop. It was later learned the vehicle collided with another vehicle just north of that location. Due to the totality of the circumstances a high-risk stop was initiated.
Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived shortly thereafter to assist Longmont Public Safety, and they attempted to take the 25-year-old male driver into custody. The driver exited the vehicle holding a knife to his throat and did not comply with commands to drop the knife and surrender. The male began to harm himself with the knife. Less than lethal force options were deployed, and the male was taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later airlifted to a metro area hospital.
The Colorado State Patrol is actively investigating the vehicle crash and the events leading up to it under their case report 1D255022.
Although Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies were not present during initial contact, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with leading the overall criminal investigation due to its geographic location. The investigation remains ongoing and documented under Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case report 25-06138.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Unit will serve as the primary communications team moving forward. Media inquiries may be directed to sheriffpio@bouldercounty.gov.
As in every criminal case, charges are merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
