Snowboarder Rescued from Skyscraper Glacier, North of Rollins Pass
Boulder County, Colo. - On Monday, September 8, 2025, at approximately 2:25 p.m., the Boulder County Communications Center received a report of a person suffering serious injuries in the vicinity of the Skyscraper Glacier, which is located north of Rollins Pass.
The patient, a 27-year-old male, was initiating a snowboard descent of the glacier when he fell, sliding and tumbling approximately 100 feet down the snowfield before coming to rest in a bergschrund. Northern Colorado MedEvac airlifted numerous Rocky Mountain Rescue Group (RMRG) volunteers to a mountain ridge above the snowfield. A team of RMRG volunteers also went in via UTV’s and foot from Rollins Pass, while a team from Grand County Search and Rescue, Grand County Sheriff’s Office, and Grand County EMS went in via ATV’s and foot from Corona Pass.
Colorado Search and Rescue Association assisted in the incident with communication to the Colorado National Guard for a possible helicopter hoist of the patient from the glacier. RMRG members accessed the patient by traversing a 300' path of glacial snow then secured the patient and treated his injuries at approximately 5:45 p.m. Simultaneously other rescuers scouted the terrain and identified a path to uphaul the patient, which was less hazardous than nearby terrain.
RMRG and Grand County Search & Rescue built an uphaul system which raised the patient to the top of the glacier while receiving ongoing medical care. At the top of the snowfield the patient was raised an additional 50' over an eroding ridge, then transported by MedEvac to a local hospital for further treatment at approximately 8:10 p.m. All rescuers then hiked out of the field and the search and rescue was concluded at 1:00 a.m.
Agencies assisting with the rescue effort included: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Search and Rescue Association, Grand County Search and Rescue, Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Grand County EMS, Northern Colorado MedEvac, and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.
The associated Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case number is 25-4390.
*Video footage of the rescue has been posted on BCSO social media.
