Fire operations are scheduled at the Cohig, Bush (Rodney Dean), Mayhoffer, and Zaharias-Thomas properties near Superior, weather permitting.

Boulder County, Colo. - The Fire Management Program plans to conduct prescribed fire operations near Superior on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Five projects are planned, all less than 2.5 acres, on the Cohig, Bush (Rodney Dean), Mayhoffer, and Zaharias-Thomas properties. The Bush (Rodney Dean) and Cohig properties are located west of the Superior Marketplace, the Mayhoffer property is located west of McCaslin Blvd, and the Zaharias-Thomas property is located along SH 128 (project map). These projects are being conducted for research purposes and to remove unwanted vegetation.

Safety Precautions

Prescribed burn projects require careful planning and are conducted only under specific weather conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness. These conditions include monitoring factors such as relative humidity, fuel moisture levels, and wind speed and direction. These parameters are critical for controlling the fire and minimizing risks.

Safety is the top priority, and multiple safeguards are in place throughout the process. Fire managers continually evaluate weather conditions before, during, and after the burn. The project will only proceed if all indicators meet stringent safety thresholds. Additionally, contingency plans are developed in advance to address any unexpected changes, ensuring the fire remains under control. At least two type-2 fire engines and at least two UTVs equipped with water tanks and hoses will be on scene.

A final decision on whether to proceed with the burn will be made on Monday, based on a thorough analysis of updated weather forecasts and on-the-ground conditions. This step is taken to ensure that the burn can be carried out safely and effectively without posing undue risk to the surrounding area.

Do Not Call 911

Smoke and flames may be visible for up to 72 hours after a controlled burn. There may be heavy smoke in the air. Please do not call 911 since a controlled burn is not an emergency. The areas will be monitored to ensure fires are completely out.
