Domestic Violence suspect apprehended after fleeing from assault in Eldorado Springs

Mandatory shelter in place order lifted after suspect found and arrested

Boulder County, Colo. - On August 8, 2023, at approximately 5:56 p.m., the Boulder County Communications Center was notified of an assault that occurred in the roadway at Eldorado Springs Drive and Saddleback Lane in unincorporated Boulder County.

Deputies responded to the area after learning the suspect, threatened an adult female with a knife, assaulted her, and stole her cell phone. Deputies learned that the suspect was the victim’s boyfriend.

The male was last seen running due north towards the Goodhue Ditch and South Boulder Creek. Deputies established a perimeter and began actively looking for the male. Due to the nature of the incident, an “Everbridge” emergency notification system alert went out to 799 contacts, advising to, “Shelter in place” and included a description of the suspect.

Drones and K-9 units were deployed in the area in attempt to locate the male. At approximately 8:08 p.m., a deputy spotted the male hiding in the tall grass. The suspect was apprehended without incident and an “All Clear” message was sent out.

The suspect was positively identified as Cody Thelen, 32-year-old male from Colorado Springs. Thelen was arrested and taken to the Boulder County Jail for charges of Felony Menacing, Domestic Violence, 3rd Degree Assault, Obstruction of a Telephone Device, Obstructing a Peace Officer, 2nd Degree Trespass, Violation of a Protection Order, and five outstanding warrants.

Assisting in the incident were members from the Boulder Police Department, Longmont Public Safety, Boulder Emergency Services, and Mountain View Fire Rescue.
