Mountain Bike Rider Sustains Life-Threatening Injuries in Crash

Patient airlifted to Denver-area hospital

Boulder County, Colo. - On Saturday, July 16, 2022 at approximately 7:12 p.m., the Boulder County Communications Center received a report of mountain biker, a 16-year-old male from Boulder, who had crashed and was not conscious. The male had been accompanied by other bicyclists who were riding rugged, steep trails on U.S. Forest Service Property in lower Lefthand Canyon.

Rescue units arrived on scene, assessed the patient, and asked for a medical helicopter for transport the male. MedEvac arrived a short time later but was unable to land in the steep terrain near the patient. Instead, the helicopter was landed on Lefthand Canyon Drive, and the patient was carried to the road in a litter by Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, American Medical Response, and Lefthand Fire Protection District personnel.

The 16-year-old male from Boulder was then flown to a Denver area hospital with life threatening injuries. The rescue took approximately one and a half hours.

Agencies assisting with the rescue included: American Medical Response, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Lefthand Fire Protection District, MedEvac, and the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.
