Stuck Climber Rescued from First Flatiron

Boulder County, Colo. -

On Monday, June 27, 2022 at approximately 10:12 am, Boulder County Communications was notified of a hiker who had become stuck while attempting to free solo on “The Spy”, a rock formation in Chautauqua Park, just west of Boulder.

The 47-year-old female was attempting to free solo on “The Spy”, when she got off the correct route and ended up on the face of the First Flatiron. The female was unable to continue climbing or descend. Climbers in the area were able to check and ensure she was uninjured and in a safe location before calling 911 for assistance.

Rangers from the City of Boulder Open Space Mountain Parks and Rescuers from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group hiked in and were able to contact the stuck climber. Rescuers rappelled down to the climber, securing her and lowering her to the ground on a rope system. The stuck climber was uninjured and was able to hike out to the trailhead.

Agencies assisting with this rescue effort included: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, City of Boulder Open-Space Mountain Parks, and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.
