Boulder County, Colo. - On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at approximately 3:48 p.m., the Boulder County Communications was notified of a hiker who was experiencing symptoms consistent with altitude sickness in the area of the East Ridge Trail at Mount Sanitas.

The 50-year-old female was hiking at Mount Sanitas after arriving from near sea level the day before. On her way down from the summit, she began feeling nauseated and weak. Family members hiking with her were able to get her into the shade and call for assistance as she was unable to walk out to the trailhead.

Firefighters from Boulder Mountain Fire Protection District (BMFPD) reached her first and began providing medical care. They determined that she needed urgent evacuation. Rescuers from Rocky Mountain Rescue Group (RMRG) hiked in and placed her into a litter. Rescuers from RMRG along with firefighters from BMFPD, and rangers from the City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks evacuated the female out to the trailhead, where she was evaluated by paramedics from American Medical Response. The female was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further care.

Agencies assisting with this rescue effort included: Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder Mountain Fire, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks, and American Medical Response.
