Reporting firearms lost in the Marshall Fire
Boulder County, Colo. - A Colorado state law enacted in 2021, the Isabella Joy Thallas Act, requires firearm owners to report a lost or stolen firearm to their local law enforcement agency.
We know that many Boulder County residents are dealing with significant loss right now due to the Marshall Fire, but as you itemize belongings that you have lost, please remember to report to your local law enforcement agency if you find that any firearms that you own are missing in their entirety. You do not need to report damaged firearms, where you have recovered parts and have accounted for the firearm.
In order to report a missing firearm(s), you will need to have the firearm’s serial number. If you lost that record in the fire, you can call the gun shop or Federal Firearm License (FFL) where you purchased the firearm to retrieve it. You may also try contacting any place where you have serviced the weapon. Please be aware that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) cannot retrieve serial numbers.
If you had a firearm(s) that was lost in the Marshall Fire, and your property is located within unincorporated Boulder County of the Town of Superior, please file a report with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. If your property is within the City of Louisville, please file a report with the Louisville Police Department.
For those reporting to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, you may do so by calling the non-emergency dispatch number at 303-441-4444, press 3, or report it online at: www.BoulderSheriff.com using the “Report a Crime” online reporting system to report that you have lost property.
For those reporting to the Louisville Police Department, you may do so by calling the non-emergency dispatch number at 303-441-4444, press 2.
